Places I Learn - Books

Welcome to my June series – Places I've Learned.
This week’s place I’ve learned from? Books.

I’m a fan of books on acting, directing, actor memoirs, and even those that have nothing to do with any of those things. Each kind has offered me something valuable, so here’s a breakdown of what I read, why I love them, and what I’ve learned.

📘 Books on Acting

There are countless books out there that explore different ways to approach the craft. Some are considered classics, while others can feel outdated.

I enjoy reading them, but here’s something I want to emphasize: Being an actor means doing.
If you're going to read an acting book, I highly recommend doing so while you're in a class or working with a coach. That way, you can apply what you're reading and get constructive feedback. It's hard to assess your growth or execution without someone reflecting your work back to you.

🎬 Books on Directing

As actors, we often have to step into the role of our own director. We make choices about how we show up in scenes, auditions, and even self-tapes.

Reading books on directing has helped me better understand the mindset of those who guide us. Directors have a vision, and our job is to help bring that vision to life. Sometimes we're lucky enough to collaborate closely with a director who invites our voice into the process.

I believe the more tools you can have in your actor toolbox, the better prepared you'll be—for anything.

✍️ Actor Memoirs

These are hands-down my favorite type of books to read! I’ll talk your ear off about the actor memoirs I’ve read and what I’ve taken away from them.

Biggest lessons so far?

  • Fame doesn’t mean easy, steady, or even big money.
  • No one will help you unless you ask—and often, unless you pay them.
  • Be careful who you let on your team. People will take your money.
  • Choose people who care about you, not just your paycheck.
  • You are more in charge of your career than you may realize.

Honestly, I could go on forever. I have such respect for actors who are willing to share their stories. Not only is it a powerful way to learn, but it’s also a reminder that we're not alone in this unpredictable journey. You never know when—or if—fame will come knocking.

📚 Non-Industry Books

These run the gamut, but I’ve found unexpected wisdom in books unrelated to acting. Many of them have helped me grow as a person and as a business.

They don’t have all the answers, and they don’t create change overnight. But they’ve made the journey feel a little more manageable—and even joyful.

Stepping outside our industry bubble is healthy. It reminds us that we have more in common with others than we might think.

Wanna Talk Books?

If you’re curious what I’ve read, I’m happy to share my list. I’m not in any book clubs (not really my thing), but I love chatting about books at my own pace. If you happen to be reading something I’ve read—or are just curious about one—reach out! I’m always up for a good conversation.
